Rather than repeat the usual tourist information about Petworth, we thought we'd tell you about our favourite bits!
EATERIES - yum!
We have a great selection of cafes and restaurants in Petworth. Our favourites are The Hungry Guest cafe in Lombard Street - we're always sending customers there! I love their wood fired pizzas too. Ann and Chris often visit Tiffins Tearoom in the High Street - Chris loves their full english breakfast and Ann and our talented seamstress Wendy frequent it for coffee, cake and a good gossip. The Angel Inn in Angel Street has a beautiful walled garden and is my favourite for anything from soup to steak. The Star pub in Market Square is under new management. We recommend its fine dining and entertaining patron!
If you don't want to sit down and eat then we also have plenty of delicious food shops. Cocoa Cafe and Sugar Lounge have a mouth watering array of old fashioned sweets and chocolates.
The Hungry Guest shop sells the most amazing artisan bread and we're addicted to their brownies - we defy you to eat a whole one! Chris thinks their butchery is one of the best in West Sussex, and they have a dedicated cheese room. I love the coronation chicken from Cherry's Deli & Bakery and they make their own Internationally renowned yummy quiches and cakes fresh every day.
This is a hard one because Petworth is full of independent retailers all passionate about their chosen wares.
Chris loves: Austins Home Hardware Store for everything from radios to screwdrivers; Hennings Wine Merchants have a brilliant selection of great wines; Allans Menswear keep him looking good & Chequers Antiques sell beautiful crystal glasses.
Ann Loves: The Petworth Antique Centre for browsing for hidden gems; The Bay Tree Bakery for their Bath Buns; the Petworth Bookshop, and Spriggs Florist for beautiful plants and flowers.
Laura loves: Artful Teasing for their amazing rose oil face cream and exquisite decorative trays; the Sue Ryder charity shop; Cate's Deli for Chamomile tea and biscuits and Red Card for their brilliant selection of cards & gifts. And Guilt Lingerie sell gorgeous undies including my favourite Aubade bras.
Petworth is the perfect place to go wandering. The tangle of quaint streets offer up endless glimpses of delightful houses and gardens. But if you want to stretch your legs more then Petworth Park has miles of walkways, taking in lakes, majestic trees and herds of deer. One of my favourite views is from the top of the hill on The Shimmings Valley (from the Angel Inn - turn left and walk just past the Catholic Church). This walk takes you past the grazing horses and allows you to look back at Petworth - stunning.
On the second Saturday of the month the Petworth Society holds a book sale in the Leconfield Hall. We all love to rummage for bargains here!
Our local Farmers Market takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month and has a new lease of life and a new home in Market Square after being taken up by our enthusiastic Town Council & Business Association. Look out for the pie man & the egg lady...not to mention my favourite, bespectacled cake-man: I always stop for his Orange & Almond cake and one of his Sussex Finnies (cheesy, spicy, oaty biscuits - delish!)
I am passionate about Lilly and her amazing, restorative yoga classes, held in the beautiful New Clarity Jewellery shop premises in New Street. Check out her website: www.earthtogoddess.com.
(The Leconfield Hall is right in the centre of Petworth and is available to hire for all manner of events.)
Jemma Langford & Patrick Thomas are two brilliant Chiropracters practising in Petworth who have sorted out several of our painful backs.
When Therapy first opened there were 56 antique shops in the town (and not very much else). The numbers have dropped a bit since then but Petworth is still world-renowned as a mecca for antique collectors.
And we haven't even mentioned Petworth House! Only a few minutes walk from the centre of town, we love the original kitchens, the Grinling Gibbons carved wood gallery, the wonderful art collection and the pleasure gardens.
Phew, you'll be exhausted if you tackle all of this in one visit...you'll just have to come back again!
Here are some quick links to some of our favourite Pertworth places:
