Garment Care

There are some great tips that we've picked up over the years - many of them from our customers. We thought we'd share them with you. Most of them are about care of the lovely things you buy from us. Well, we want you to get the most out of your purchases!

We'd love to hear your useful tips too - the more, the merrier!

Ah they take a beating don't they? But here are a few preventative measures that you can take to protect them:

If you buy a suede bag or suede shoes we always recommend that you spray with a protector before you wear them. Not only will this protect against rain, but stains too.

If your suede is in need of a fluff up then hold them over the steam from a kettle and brush the pile with a rubber suede brush. Don't burn yourselves!

Did you know that leather soled shoes and boots should never be worn in the rain?! The water warps the leather and can make it crack. The solution is to have your friendly cobbler put rubber soles on them when they're new. We swear by the friendly & capable Andrew at Petworth Cobblers.

Salt marks on leather or vinyl boots can be removed with a cloth soaked in 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar. Brilliant!

Patent leather can be shined with a soft cloth and vinegar.

Shine leather with petroleum jelly.

Please don't put your stretch jeans in a hot wash thinking that you can shrink them. You will fail - but you will destroy the lycra which holds them together!

Always wash your jeans inside out - it will preserve the colour and stop them streaking. But don't use fabric conditioner - it rots the fabric - eek!

Stiff zips can be eased by running a soft pencil or wax candle along the teeth.

If your favourite garment is covered with fluff try wrapping wide sticky tape in reverse around your hand and lifting the lint that way - very satisfying!

Talking of fluff: To stop Mohair blankets and knits from shedding, put them in a plastic bag in the freezer for two weeks; take it out and use it; then the first time you clean it, dry it thoroughly and put it back in the freezer for another two weeks...and you'll never shed fluff again!

Dab the centre of buttons with clear nail varnish to prevent the thread unravelling.

STAINS! I'm a slitter and always spilling things down my front. I don't know what I'd do without Vanish Oxi Action crystals. I use a scoop in every wash, and if I have a tricky stain I soak the garment in a solution overnight. Revolutionary!
